Ruth Chapman Obituary

Ruth L. Chapman drew her last breath during the evening of March 18, 2022. In her final hours, she was embraced by her Lord, her family, and the compassionate staff of Mercy House. Ruth was a strong, resilient woman who managed to live in her home for all but the last few days of her 102 years routinely climbing the 13 stairs to her bedroom with minimal assist from her family care providers.

Ruth was born on January 4, 1920 to Alfred and Helen Blomquist (nee Asplundh). She grew up on the family farm and, although she enjoyed traveling, she would call Vestal home for her entire life. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert G. Chapman (10/4/1917 - 6/7/1999), and her siblings Aurora, Sven, Allan (Rita), Heide (Leo) Rought, Vera (Cleve) Cleveland, Ralph, Edgar (Phyllis), Dorothy (Charles) Kocian, and Janet (Edward) Allen. Ruth is survived by her children, Linda (Doug) Doolittle, Robert B. (Teresa) Chapman, Patricia DiPasquale, and Dennis (Angela) Chapman, along with many grandchildren, great grandchildren, one great great grandchild, nephews, and nieces.

Ruth and her husband, Robert, were founding members of Christ the King Lutheran Church in Vestal. Ruth served the church in several capacities and was a volunteer for the Vestal School district, the American Cancer Society, and other community organizations. But most of all, she realized her calling in raising her four children. She made the Chapman house a home, welcoming family and friends with delicious meals and baked breads such as her delectable Swedish Guta, as well as her sinful brownies, cakes, and cookies.

There will be a commemoration of Ruth’s life at Christ the King Lutheran Church, 499 Plaza Drive, Vestal on Friday, April 29, 2022. The family will receive friends at 1:00 PM with a service to follow at 2:00 PM. In memory of Ruth, please consider a donation to Mercy House, 212 N.
