John Morrissey Obituary

VESTAL - On 08/31/22, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, John (Jack) Morrissey of Vestal, New York was called home to be with the Lord. He is preceded in death by his father, Patrick Morrissey, mother, Sylvia Morrissey, and sisters, MaryAnn Fontana and Patricia Pinkey. He leaves behind his wife, Sonja Morrissey, children Kelly (Doug) Schoenberger, Patrick (Lani) Morrissey, Lisa (Sean) Magill, Stephen Morrissey, grandchildren Emma and Haley Schoenberger, Katherine (Erik) Deacon, John Morrissey, Morrigan and Keegan Magill, and great-grandchildren Madelyn and Jack Deacon and nieces Diana, Melody, Camille Michelle, Yvonne (Sue). Jack was born in Johnson City, New York on 10/02/1936. He attended St James elementary school and Johnson City High School, where he lettered in football and track. After graduation in 1954, Jack enlisted in the Marine Corp. After the Corps, he returned to the Triple Cities and joined the Johnson City Police Department. He rose to the rank of Detective before using the GI Bill to attend SUNY Cortland. Upon receiving his degree, Jack accepted a position as a Special Agent with the US Secret Service. After two years he transferred laterally to the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) where he had a distinguished thirty-seven-year career serving in offices in Binghamton, Syracuse, Plattsburgh, Detroit and Buffalo. After law enforcement, Jack continued his service to the community as a substitute teacher at Owego High School. Jack was a prodigious reader, consuming upwards of two hundred books a year. While he focused mostly on military history, he thoroughly enjoyed police/crime stories and theology. If not reading, he could be found watching movies (old and new), listening to music (mostly old), or taking donations to the local animal shelters. In the early 2000s, Jack traveled to his ancestral homeland of Ireland. He learned that based on his father having been born in the Emerald Isle, he was eligible for Irish citizenship. So at the age of 80, he applied for and was granted Irish citizenship. Visitation will be held at St James Catholic Church in Johnson City, NY on 09/15/22 from 9:30 am to 10:30 am followed by a Funeral Mass. The burial at Cavalry Cemetery will be private.
