Robert Henry Krome, 84, passed away peacefully at home in Johnson City on Wednesday, April 18th, 2018. He was born in Sayre, PA on September 18th, 1933, the son of the late Robert and Alice Krome. Bob was predeceased by his in laws, John and Anna Fetcenko, brother, Carl Krome, infant daughter, Mary Krome, and granddaughter, Melissa Krome. Bob is survived by his wife of 59 years, Irene (Fetcenko) Krome, his children; Bob (Darla) Krome, Nina (Patrick) Chiles and Nadine (Joe) Ferguson; his grandchildren, Steve, Nate and Beth Krome, Rachel (Steve) Burns, Helena, Anna and Nolan Chiles, Monica, Joe and Sean Ferguson; Christine (Nick) Andretta, Becky (Joel) Parsons; great granddaughters, Adelaide Burns and Annabella Parsons. After graduating from Elmira Free Academy in 1951, Bob attended Bowling Green University. He served as a Sergeant with the US Army as a morse code interceptor during the Korean conflict where he was stationed for two years at Camp Momoyama, Japan. After serving his country, he continued his education and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Harpur College in 1959 and a Master of Science in Education degree from SUNY Cortland in 1961. He began his teaching career with the Binghamton School District for 7 years and then taught American History at Maine Endwell High School for 33 years. He loved teaching and inspired many students throughout his 40 years in education. Bob was the proud voice of the “Maine Endwell Spartans” announcing at Varsity football games for 25 years. He was an avid reader and shared his love and knowledge of history with family and friends. For many years, he volunteered at the American Civic Association. He especially enjoyed assisting the foreign born as he taught them American History and government, preparing them for their citizenship test. He was a man of great faith and served as a lecturer at Holy Rosary Church. He also loved gardening and enjoyed spending time outdoors. Bob was a hard working, selfless man and he will be greatly missed. A Funeral Mass will be offered at St. James Church, 147 Main Street, Johnson City, NY, Monday at 9:30 am. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery, Johnson City, NY. The family will receive friends at JF Rice Funeral Home, 150 Main Street, Johnson City, NY, on Sunday from 5-8. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in Bob’s name can be made to St. James Church, 147 Main Street, Johnson City, NY.
