Joseph J. Murphy

January 14, 1929 ~ November 21, 2017 (age 88) 88 Years Old

Joseph J. Murphy, 88, of Vinton, VA and formerly of Johnson City passed away on Tuesday, November 21, 2017 at his home.  He was predeceased by his loving wife Mary; parents, Joseph and Martha Murphy; two sisters, Martha Marie Tzivani and Frances Crotsley.  He is survived by his loving children and their spouses, Diana (Sean) Higgins, John (Marilyn) Murphy, Maryjo Murphy, Matthew (Carol) Murphy and Teri (Tom) Myer; five grandchildren, Shane, Colleen, Christine, Jennifer and Kyle; five great grandchildren; two sisters and a brother-in-law, JoAnne and Chris Condon and Marty Bunzey; three sister-in-laws, Dorothy, Catherine and Margaret as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.  Joseph was a United States Army 11th Airborne Division Veteran, stationed in Japan.  He was a past president of the American Legion Post 1305.  He retired from IBM, Austin, TX and was a member of their Quarter Century Club.  Joseph was a devote Catholic and a member of Saint Andrew’s Church, Roanoke, VA.  Joseph was a great mechanic and could fix anything and everything.  He loved his tractors, sailing and relaxing at home on the porch watching the wildlife in the yard.  A special Thank you to his caregiver and daughter Maryjo, without whom Joseph would not have had the quality of life he did for the last 10 years. The family would also like to express much gratitude and thanks to Amedisys Hospice staff, nurse Stacy along with Susan, Alvie, Stormy and JJ who took such good loving care of him in his final days.  

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, November 28, 2017 from 9:30am until 10:30am at St. James Church, 131 Main St., Johnson City.  A Funeral Mass will follow at 10:30am with burial in Calvary Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, donations in Joseph’s memory can be made to American Diabetes Association.  Online condolences can be left for the family at www.jfricefuneralhome.com.
